CIYOTA was founded by young people living in the Kyangwali refugee settlement in Uganda. Upon arriving in the settlement, CIYOTA’s founders recognized the critical challenges faced by the refugee community: poverty, violence, disease, and insufficient access to quality and functional education. It is in this context that CIYOTA was created to improve the lives of young people through functional education, socially responsible leadership, and social entrepreneurship activities.

IN THE LAND OF OU MAKAI – A Bushman Odyssey – TEASER from Richard Wicksteed on Vimeo.

A feature-length film by Richard Wicksteed

Edited by Timothy Gabb

One Bushman family’s journey from the abyss of genocide to a tentative freedom in the Kgalagadi wilderness.

IN THE LAND OF OU MAKAI chronicles the Kruiper Bushman family’s struggle to reclaim their ancestral land and spiritual essence after 120 years of German colonial genocide, apartheid dispossession, and post- apartheid social reorganization.

IN THE LAND OF OU MAKAI is the first Bushman account of an astounding history of persecution and survival that until now has only been known from German colonial archives.

Our film explores the Bushman heritage in the Kgalagadi wilderness through the narratives of Bushman traditional leader Dawid Kruiper, 76, his brother Buks, 72, a master tracker and traditional healer, and their families.
